Dermatochalasis is a skin condition of the upper eyelid characterised by excess skin affecting both the upper palpebral fold and the free edge of the eyelashes. It leads to an ageing of the patient’s eyes and can reduce the visual field through skin or eyelash ptosis.
Blepharoplasty is an eyelid lift performed under local or general anaesthetic, providing radical treatment for this dermatochalasis.
There are several types of blepharoplasty:
Upper blepharoplasty, which consists of removing the spindle of excess skin to open up the eyes and lighten the heaviness of the upper eyelid. Internal fatty hernia can also be treated in the case of ‘heavy eyes’. This surgery is not covered by social security unless there is an amputation of the visual field certified by an ophthalmological examination.

For the first 5 days, the eyes are discreetly opened during sleep. A protective eye cream is required.
The threads are removed after 7 days.
Inferior blepharoplasty of the bags, which consists of the removal of the fatty bags either through the inside of the eye ‘transconjunctival route’ (leaving no scar) or through the subciliary route if the eyelid is to be lifted at the same time or if an associated dark circle is to be treated. This procedure is not covered by social security.
Lower blepharoplasty to lift the lower eyelid and malar pouch. Using a subciliary approach, a genuine centro-facial lift can be performed to correct fine lines on the eyelid and any malar pouch. In certain cases (round eyes and hyperlaxity of the eyelid), the eyelid must be re-fixed by a canthopexy (almond-shaped eyes) to avoid ectropion (retraction of the eyelid). This operation is not covered by social security.
Surgery for dark circles involves using fatty pockets to fill the hollows in the circles. Sometimes, simple micro lipofilling is sufficient. This surgery is not covered by social security.
Blepharoplasty gives very satisfactory and natural results. It should be noted that the scar may be pink for several months. Make-up or a correction pen can camouflage the scars from the 7th to 15th day after surgery.
