The tuberous breast is a benign malformation of the breasts that presents multiple variations. The lower part (one or both lower quadrants) of the breast does not develop fully and appears to be compressed by the skin stretched over it. The fold under the breast may be abnormally displaced upwards and the upper part of the breast tilts downwards over the malformation. The nipple and areola may be distended.

A classification into 3 grades has been described:

grade 1: minimal malformation with deformation of the lower-internal quadrant of the breast

grade 2: moderate malformation with deformation of the lower quadrants of the breast

grade 3: malformation affecting the whole breast.

This type of breast surgery is complex and cannot be considered as a simple breast augmentation or reduction.

It requires the correct diagnosis to be made and the surgical technique to be adapted to the anomaly.

It is tricky because it requires several anomalies to be corrected at the same time: often the volume (by increasing or decreasing), the position of the sub-breast fold, the position of the gland and most of the time an asymmetry.

So in the most complex cases, not everything can be done in a single operation, and two operations will be necessary to secure the technique and obtain the best possible result. Touch-ups may also be necessary a few months after the first operation.

A strategy must therefore be defined beforehand, which may combine the following surgical techniques:

  • Breast augmentation by prosthesis or lipofilling
  • Breast reduction
  • Breast lift

Please note that a touch-up operation is often necessary.
