The calves can be reshaped using made-to-measure prostheses placed in the groove of the medial and/or lateral gastrocnemius muscles. In certain specific cases, we can correct muscular atrophy of the calves:

  • varus equinus clubfoot
  • sequelae of poliomyelitis
  • degenerative diseases (Lupus and Charcot-Marie-Tooth)
  • traumatic or surgical sequelae

What does surgery involve?

This is the technique developed and published by Dr Glicenstein in 1975.

The operation is performed in the prone position, under general anaesthetic, and lasts less than 1 hour. The risks are minimal.

The surgeon marks out the location of the compartment, makes an incision in the hollow of the knee and places the prosthesis under the aponeurosis of the muscle. The prosthesis is closed in two planes with absorbable thread.

The patient remains in hospital for a maximum of 3 days.

What happens after the operation?

There is little pain after the operation (simple painkillers).

No post-operative care is required: absorbable stitches and compression bandages for 8 days. Getting up and walking progressively are prescribed from the next day to avoid the risk of phlebitis and anticoagulants. There was no seroma or serous effusion.

Off work for 15 days and restriction of sport for 3 months.
